Is Ceramic Coating Worth It in Austin?

For a car you plan to keep for a few years that lives outside in Austin sun, usually yes: a coating is a hard, bonded layer that makes sap, bird droppings and water spots release in a wash instead of etching in. For a lease going back within a year, usually not — a sealant does most of the job for far less. At TRZ ceramic coating is quoted per car because it includes paint correction first; the middle ground is our Koch Chemie 3-month sealant, a $30 add-on.

What a ceramic coating actually is

A ceramic coating is a liquid, usually silica-based, that cures into a thin, hard layer bonded to your clear coat. Unlike wax, which sits on top of the paint and washes away over weeks, a coating stays put for years with normal care.

What you notice day to day is that the car stays clean longer and washes faster. Water beads and sheets off, and dirt, pollen and bug residue have a harder time gripping the surface.

What it will not do

It is not armor. A coating does not stop rock chips, door dings or a key scratch — that is paint protection film, a different product.

It does not mean you never wash the car. It means washing is quicker and gentler. Hard water left to dry on a coated car can still spot it; the spots just come off more easily.

And it cannot fix the paint underneath. A coating locks in whatever is there, swirl marks included, and makes it glossier. That is the whole reason correction comes first.

Why Austin is hard on paint

Four things do most of the damage here: sun and heat, hard water from sprinklers and hoses, bird droppings and bugs baked on in summer, and tree residue and pollen. There is a whole guide on what Austin does to car paint.

A coating helps with all four for the same reason. It gives contamination a slick, sacrificial surface to sit on instead of the clear coat itself, so it lifts off in a wash rather than bonding and etching.

Coating, sealant or wax?

Wax is the entry point. Every TRZ exterior detail finishes with a spray wax that protects for about a month.

A sealant is the middle ground. Our Koch Chemie 3-month paint sealant is a $30 upgrade on any detail and lasts three times as long as the wax.

A coating is the long game — years rather than months — and it is the only one of the three that starts by correcting the paint. See ceramic coating for exactly what is included.

Why paint correction comes first

Before a coating goes on, the paint has to be as clean and as flat as it will ever be. Ours starts with a full clay bar decontamination and a multi-stage chemical decontamination, then a one-step machine polish to take out light swirls and haze.

Skipping that step is the most common reason a coating disappoints. You end up with a glossy, well-protected layer of the same swirl marks you had before.

Heavily scratched paint can need more than one polishing stage. If yours does, we will say so when we look at it, before we quote.

Who should skip it

A lease you are handing back within a year. A sealant gives you most of the benefit for a fraction of the cost.

A car that lives in a garage and gets washed every couple of weeks anyway. You will get the gloss but not much of the value.

Anyone who would rather just keep the car maintained. A maintenance plan on a regular schedule does a lot of the same work — see how often to detail a car in Texas.

Questions

How much does ceramic coating cost at TRZ?

It is quoted per car, because the paint correction stage depends on the condition of your paint. We look at the car first and give you one price before we start.

How long does a ceramic coating last?

Years rather than months, with normal hand washing. The exact rating depends on the product, and we tell you what to expect for yours when we quote.

Is ceramic coating the same as paint protection film?

No. Film is a thick, clear urethane layer that absorbs rock chips and scratches. A coating is a thin, hard layer that protects against contamination, UV and water spotting, and makes the car easier to clean.

Can I take a coated car through an automatic car wash?

You can, but brush washes are the fastest way to put swirl marks back into paint you just paid to have corrected. A hand wash with a pH-neutral soap keeps a coating at its best.

What is the cheapest protection that still helps?

Our Koch Chemie 3-month paint sealant, a $30 add-on to any detail.
