How Often to Detail Your Car in Central Texas
For most Central Texas drivers: an exterior detail every 4–6 weeks and a full interior every 3–4 months. Cars that live outside, tow to the lake, or carry kids and dogs need the shorter end of both. The climate here is genuinely harder on paint and interiors than most of the country, and the schedule should reflect that rather than a national rule of thumb.
What Central Texas does to a car
Sun is the main one. Months of direct UV is what fades and oxidises clear coat, and it bakes anything sitting on the paint — bird mess, sap, bug splatter — into something that etches rather than rinses.
Cedar season runs roughly December through February and coats everything in fine yellow pollen that works into vents, cowls and door jambs as much as onto paint.
Limestone and caliche dust is constant west of the city — off unsealed drives, county roads and construction. It is fine, pale and abrasive, and it does not come off casually.
Hard water is the quiet one. Tap water here carries dissolved minerals, so a driveway wash that dries in the sun leaves spots behind. Over a summer those can etch into the clear coat.
A realistic schedule
Exterior every 4–6 weeks. This is the one that actually protects the car — it removes what is sitting on the paint before it bonds, and puts protection back on.
Interior every 3–4 months for most people, more often with kids, dogs or a work truck. Dust and grit in carpet act like sandpaper on the fibres, so the interval matters more than it looks.
A full reset once or twice a year, or whenever it has been long enough that you are not sure.
Ceramic coating changes the maths rather than the schedule: it does not mean you stop washing, it means dirt releases more easily and the sun does less damage in between.
Signs you have left it too long
Water stops beading and lies flat on the paint — the protection is gone.
The finish feels rough to a fingertip through a plastic bag. That is bonded contamination, and it needs a decontamination wash, not a rinse.
White spots that do not wipe off. That is mineral spotting that has started to etch, and past a point it needs machine polishing.
