What Is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a microscopically thin layer of clear coat to level out swirl marks, light scratches, haze and water-spot etching, so light reflects evenly and the paint looks deep and glossy again. A one-step correction uses a single polish and removes light defects; two- and three-step corrections add a heavier compound for deeper ones. It cannot fix a scratch that has gone through the clear coat. At TRZ, a one-step correction is part of every ceramic coating.
What paint correction actually does
The shine on a car comes from the clear coat — the transparent top layer over the colour. Washing with a dirty mitt, automatic car washes and wiping dust off dry all leave fine scratches in it. Each one catches light, and together they show up as the spider-web swirls you see around a light source in the sun.
Correction takes those out by polishing the clear coat down, very slightly, until the surface is level with the bottom of the scratches. It is removing material, not filling it — which is why it lasts, and why it has to be done carefully.
One-step, two-step and three-step
The number is how many different compounds and polishes go over the paint. More steps remove deeper defects, take longer and remove more clear coat.

What it cannot fix
Anything that has gone through the clear coat. Run a fingernail across a scratch: if the nail catches, the scratch is probably into the colour or the primer, and polishing will soften it at best. That needs touch-up or paint.
Rock chips, dents and failing clear coat — the peeling, cloudy patches you see on old roofs and hoods — are not correction jobs either.
And correction removes clear coat that does not grow back. Doing it often, or aggressively, uses up paint. That is why a good detailer takes out as little as the defects need, not as much as the machine can.
Why it comes before a ceramic coating
A coating locks in whatever is under it. Put one on swirled paint and you have a glossy, well-protected layer of swirls for years. So the paint is decontaminated and corrected first, then coated.

Keeping it corrected
Corrected paint stays that way until something scratches it again, and the usual culprit is washing. Hand wash with a clean mitt, rinse grit off before touching the paint, and skip brush car washes.
