What Car Detailing Costs in Austin
In Austin, the price of a detail is set by three things: how big the vehicle is, whether you want the inside, the outside, or both, and what condition it is in. At TRZ a full detail is $180 for a coupe or sedan, $220 for a two-row SUV and $260 for a three-row SUV or truck. Interior-only starts at $150 and exterior-only at $90.
Why detailers won't give you a price
Most detailing websites in Austin will not publish a number. The reason is usually not dishonesty — it is that condition genuinely changes the work, and a shop that quotes $150 sight-unseen ends up arguing with a customer whose back seat has three years of dog hair in it.
The cost of that caution is that you cannot compare anyone. We publish flat prices by vehicle size and quote the genuinely variable things — heavy pet hair, headlight restoration, ceramic coating — separately and before we start.
What actually moves the price
Vehicle size is the big one, and it is not about surface area so much as seats and carpet. A three-row SUV has more fabric to shampoo and extract than a sedan, which is why it sits a tier above.
Condition is the other. A car detailed every month is a maintenance job; a car that has not been touched in three years is a restoration. Pet hair in particular is slow, manual work that no machine really solves.
Add-ons are genuinely optional. Headlight restoration, engine bay cleaning, ozone odour treatment and pet hair removal are quoted per car and only when they are needed.
Is mobile detailing more expensive?
It does not have to be, and ours is not. A mobile detailer has no building to pay for, which offsets the drive time. What you are really buying is the half-day you would otherwise spend dropping a car off and collecting it.
What to check before you book anyone
Ask whether they carry insurance and for what. We carry $1M per occurrence, $2M aggregate and $25,000 of garage keepers coverage, and we will say so in writing.
Ask what water they use. Central Texas tap water is hard, and a hose wash that dries in the sun leaves mineral spotting that can etch clear coat over a summer. De-ionized water dries clean — more on that in protecting car paint in Austin.
Ask who is doing the work. TRZ is owner-operated — the person who books your detail is the person who details your car.

A $60 "detail" is a wash. That is fine if a wash is what you want. A real interior detail involves shampooing and extracting carpet and upholstery, steam cleaning, and conditioning leather, and it takes hours — the time is the cost.
