Dripping Springs is limestone and caliche under open Hill Country sky, and every winter the mountain cedar lets go of a yellow-green pollen that coats a parked car in a day.

Dripping Springs sits in northern Hays County on US 290, about 23 miles west of Austin, with Ranch Road 12 crossing it in the centre of town. It calls itself the Gateway to the Hill Country, it became Texas's first Dark Sky Community in 2014, and the roads around it are lined with wedding venues, wineries, breweries and distilleries. Dripping Springs ISD serves the area, which has grown fast in recent years, so older homes on acreage now share the landscape with new subdivisions going up along 290 and RR 12. Many properties sit on generous lots with detached garages or shops, and plenty of trucks and SUVs on them are working vehicles.

Much of the ground is limestone and caliche, and gravel or caliche driveways are common on the larger lots, which puts pale dust in wheel arches and on lower panels. New subdivisions bring construction dust, and the open land offers little shade from the sun. Then there is winter: mountain cedar, or Ashe juniper, covers the hills west of Austin, and from December into February it releases pollen heavily enough to coat a parked car. A detail here usually targets dust, seasonal pollen and UV, both inside and out. Spring adds oak pollen and summer adds the heat.
