How to Remove Hard Water Spots From Your Car
Hard water spots are the minerals left behind when tap, sprinkler or lake water dries on a car. Fresh spots wipe off with a quick detailer. Spots that have bonded need a dedicated water-spot remover. Spots that have etched into the clear coat — the ones you can still see after a wash — need machine polishing. The way to stop them is to never let mineral-heavy water dry on the paint: we rinse with de-ionized water at 0 PPM, which dries clean even in full sun.
Why Austin cars get water spots
Central Texas water is hard: it carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium picked up from limestone. When a drop of it dries on paint or glass, the water leaves and the minerals stay as a white ring.
Three sources do most of it here — sprinklers that hit a car parked beside the lawn, a hose wash left to dry in the sun, and lake water on anything that tows a boat. Heat makes it worse, because the water evaporates before you can dry it.
The three kinds of water spot
Not every spot is the same problem, and using the wrong fix either does nothing or does damage. Run a clean fingertip over the spot after washing the car — if you can still see it and it feels smooth, it is bonded or etched.

Removing them yourself
Work in the shade on a cool panel, never on hot paint. Wash the car first so you are not rubbing grit around.
- Wash and rinse the car, then dry it completely.
- Try a quick detailer on one spot with a clean microfiber. If it wipes away, it was a fresh deposit — do the rest the same way.
- If it stays, use a water-spot remover made for automotive paint. Work one small section at a time and do not let it dry on the surface.
- Rinse the section, dry it, and look again under good light.
- Anything still visible has etched into the clear coat. Stop there — scrubbing harder will not fix it and can make it worse.
- Put a layer of wax or sealant on the paint so the next spots have something other than clear coat to sit on.
Water spots on glass
Glass spots the same way and is often worse, because side windows sit right in the sprinkler line. The same fresh-bonded-etched rule applies. Etched glass needs a glass polish rather than a paint polish, and it is worth telling us about when you book.
How to stop them coming back
Do not wash in direct sun, and dry the car properly afterwards with a clean towel or a blower rather than letting it air-dry.
Move the car out of the sprinkler line, or change the sprinkler schedule so it does not run while the car is parked there.
