What buyers and appraisers notice first
Nobody inspecting a used car starts with the paint. They open the door. The smell, the state of the seats and carpet, and whatever is in the cupholders set their opinion of how the whole car has been looked after.
Then the outside at a glance: the wheels, the headlights and the glass. Cloudy headlights and brake dust age a car more than a few swirl marks do.

What to skip
Ceramic coating. It is a years-long investment in a car you are keeping; on a car you are selling, the next owner gets the benefit.
Paint correction on a daily driver headed to a dealer. Trade-in appraisals are quick, and light swirls rarely move the number the way a clean interior does.

When to book it
As close to the sale as you can — the day before listing photos, or the day or two before the appraisal. A car detailed two weeks early has been driven for two weeks.
Take the photos right after. Clean glass and dressed tires look very different on a listing than they do a month later.
Lease returns
A lease return is judged on wear, and a clean car makes the inspection easier to read. The same rule applies: a full detail, plus odor removal or headlight restoration if the car needs them. Check your lease paperwork for what counts as excess wear before you book anything else.
