Mueller hides its garages on rear alleys, so cars stay out of the sun, but every trip in and out goes down that alley, and the dust ends up in door jambs, wheel wells and on the carpet.
Mueller is the planned community built on the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, about three miles from downtown in northeast Austin. The layout is new urbanist: porch-front houses, row homes, townhomes and condos set close to the sidewalk, with garages tucked behind on rear alleys. Aldrich Street is the walkable commercial spine, the Thinkery children's museum is here, and the central lake park and Southwest Greenway provide the green space and walking paths that link the sections together. Windsor Park, Cherrywood, Springdale Hills and Chestnut are all nearby, with sidewalks and greenways running between them and the park.
Rear-alley garages are good news for paint, because most cars here sleep out of the sun. The catch is the alley itself. Every trip in and out rolls through it, and the dust, grit and runoff there get picked up by tyres and thrown into wheel wells, rocker panels and door jambs. Step out and it comes in on your shoes, ending up in the carpet and around the pedals. Tight garages also make it hard to open the doors wide and clean properly yourself. Detailing here tends to focus on the lower half of the car and the floors: wheel wells, sills, jambs, mats and carpet.
